Moissanite Color
-
1. What color are Moissanite gemstones?
The vast majority of Moissanite sold is near-colorless although a limited quantity of dark green and light green Moissanite is available.
-
2. How does Moissanite's color effect its beauty?
Acting as a prism, a Moissanite gemstone divides light into a spectrum of colors and reflects this light as colorful flashes called "fire." The rule with diamonds is that the less color, the more fire is created. However, despite the fact that Moissanite is not a pure-white gemstone, because of its special refractive properties, Moissanite far outperforms the diamond in both brilliance and fire as seen in the picture here.

3. "I am concerned about the "near-colorless" color of Moissanite? What can I do?"
In our experience we have learned that certain Moissanite shapes and jewelry settings can enhance the "whiteness" of the gemstone.
Due to the high level of light dispersion, Round Brilliant stones appear the whitest, followed by Square Brilliant and Oval stones. Radiant stones and especially the Pear and Marquise stones have lower light dispersion so the color will be more apparent. The color is also more apparent in Princess than in Square Brilliant. However, please keep in mind that even "near-colorless" stones are very white, are cut to maximize light dispersion.
Prong settings are preferable to channel or bezel settings since more of the stone is exposed to the light. Yellow gold prongs can make the stone appear very slightly more yellow as the reflection of the prongs can be seen in the gemstone. Likewise, white gold or platinum prongs will make the stone appear slightly whiter. However, yellow gold shanks appear to hide the color better since it does not create the contrast of the near-colorless stone on white as white gold or platinum shanks do.
Please keep in mind that these recommendations will only slightly improve the "whiteness" of the stone, but is something to keep in mind if you are worried about the perceived color of your Moissanite gemstone.
